What makes great Portrait Photography? Award Winning Portrait Photographer Padraic Deasy will give you his thoughts on a recent portrait photo he created that was published on the front cover of American Professional Photography Magazine.

I have spent years simplifying my portrait photography and defining my photographic style and the more I focus on what it is that defines a great portrait photo the more i realise that the strongest most engaging portraits are the simplest ones.

This Portrait is in a classic photography style and speaks of emotion, depth and absolute simplicity, In my photo studio Deasy Photographic we call this style of portrait photography our “Classic Style” which is always done in fine-art black and white and has become our most emotional style of portrait photography which we have become famous for.

Occasionally you might want to portray a subject gazing away into the distance or sunk deep in thought, in which case its perfectly acceptable to have your subject looking away from the camera.  Most of the time however, eye contact is essential if a portrait photo is to succeed. Good eye contact can convey a persons mood far more effectively than any smile. Its essential that the eyes are in sharp focus, even if other parts of the frame are not. When composing your images, get into the habit of focus on the eyes first.

You want your portrait photography to give the impression the subject is connecting directly with the viewer; rather than with a camera. This is where a tripod and cable release are useful, because they allow you to step away from your equipment and maintain eye contact.

This Level 2 workshop “Creative Portrait Lighting Techniques” breaks lighting down into something you can understand and know how to use in practical day to day shooting in a studio environment

Light is the key element in effective and meaningful portraits and this workshop shows you the tools you need and provides essential lighting techniques. Light defines the mood, the form, the texture and sets the stage for the essence of the subject to shine through.

This workshop is designed to give participants a working understanding of lighting techniques and the quality of light to improve the impact of their photographs.

This hands-on workshop covers lighting ratios, quality of light using beauty dishes, softboxes and grid spots, and the depth of light or altering the shadows by use of reflectors and fill lights. lighting ratios and metering techniques are covered.

This dynamic lighting workshop is designed to help you master the use of strobe lighting to achieve outstanding portraits. This class is intended to increase your lighting skills by using a variety of lighting equipment.

Padraic will demonstrate a variety of techniques with multiple light set ups, high key and low key lighting and beauty dishes. The quality and direction of light, matched with our subject and composition, defines the overall effect of the image, whether it’s soft and warm or bold and graphic.

Padraic will teach you how to “Light” the portrait by utilizing a variety of modifiers to create dramatic and unique photographs. By developing our skills with various techniques we can unlock our creative instincts and make evocative and powerful images.

About Presenter Padraic Deasy FIPPA, QEP was born in Ireland in 1976 and joined his family business after graduating from Dun Laoghaire College of Art And Design in 1996. Having grown up in the business he was always surrounded by photography and it was a given that he would take over Deasy Photographic.

Padraic has been awarded the titles of “European Portrait Photographers of the Year”, “Irish Photographer of the Year 2011″ is a members of the world renowned “Society of XXV” achieved Fellowship distinction in Professional Portrait Photography and has delivered seminars all over the world.

Padraic has continued to master the art of portrait photography and is always pushing the boundaries making his work unique and enviable within his profession. His work has been featured in photography magazines Rangefinder, Professional Photographer Magazine America and La Fotografia in Spain.
Who Should Attend Level 2 – You are a very confident user of priority shooting modes and may even been using full manual exposure control. You are familiar with simple lighting set ups and have had some hands on time with lighting equipment.  You are aiming to consolidate your understanding and improve basic techniques as well as be introduced to some new ideas and techniques that will give you the confidence to experiment with different creative outcomes.

This one-day intensive Introduction to Lighting for Portraits workshop will get you up to speed with studio lighting and you’ll get plenty of hands-on practice with professional studio equipment, all under the expert guidance of Padraic Deasy. You will learn all about studio equipment and how it works, technically and artistically.

You’ll learn what modifiers do what, and how each is best used to achieve different lighting effects. Finally we’ll give you the technical know-how to create simple but effective lighting set ups, then we move to the practical session where you put all of the theory in to practice. Who Should Attend Level 1 – Confident Beginner “You are familiar with aperture, shutter, ISO and understand how these work together to create a correct exposure. You shoot in Aperture or Shutter Priority modes and can use the basic features on your digital camera confidently.
